Lewis Latimer was a trailblazing inventor, draftsman, and poet who overcame countless obstacles to achieve his dreams. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1848 to parents who had escaped slavery, Latimer joined the U.S. Navy at age 16 and later worked with some of the most famous inventors of his time, including Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison.

Latimer made significant contributions to multiple fields, from telegraphy to electric lighting to the environment. He was the inventor of the carbon filament, which revolutionized the production of incandescent light bulbs and paved the way for the widespread use of electric lighting. His other inventions, include an improved restroom fixture and a lock for elevated railways.
